Many women may not know what it means to be sexually healthy. The World Health Organization offers this definition, “Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.” Our physicians agree with this broad definition, and we want women to understand the many issues involved with sexual health.

Dealing with sexual dysfunction issues is an important part of sexual health

Sexual dysfunction is what many people think of when they hear about sexual health. Sexual problems can be caused by hormonal changes, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Other issues such as depression, stress and anxiety, or negative sexual experiences in the past can also cause problems. Our Southlake obgyns have the expertise to help women with whatever type of sexual dysfunction they are experiencing, including problems with desire, arousal, orgasms or sexual pain disorders.

It’s important for women to learn about safer sex

Sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, can cause problems with sexual health. Our Southlake obgyns want women to know how to reduce their risk of STIs.

Latex Condoms: Latex condoms are the only birth control method that protects against STIs. Unless they are in a monogamous relationship, women of all ages should use latex condoms when they have vaginal, oral or anal intercourse.
Vaccinations: Women should talk with our physicians about vaccines that can protect them against hepatitis B and C. Younger women should ask about the HPV vaccine.
Sexual History: Women should find out about their partners’ sexual history before having sexual contact. The more sexual partners a woman has, the higher her risk of getting STIs.
