In women, UTIs develop because of the close proximity of the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body near the anus. Bacteria from the intestines can easily move from the anus to the urethra, allowing a gateway for germs to travel to the bladder. Because women have short urethras, bacteria have easy access to the bladder. Infection may also spread to the kidneys if the infection is not stopped. Sexual intercourse can also contribute to the issue.

When you visit our Grapevine or Fort Worth ObGyn practice with symptoms of a UTI, your physician will first request a urine sample so that we can test for bacteria, blood, nitrates and/or ketones in your urine. Once we confirm the presence of an infection, your physician will prescribe an antibiotic and possibly additional medication to alleviate any discomfort.

To completely eradicate the infection, make sure to finish the full course of antibiotics even if your symptoms improve.

For preventative measures, consider the following tips to avoid a UTI and UTI treatment.

Go immediately when you feel the urge to urinate
Empty your bladder completely
Wipe from front to back
Drink plenty of water
Take showers instead of baths
Wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing
Use the bathroom right after sex
