{"id":12975,"date":"2020-05-05T22:56:38","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T03:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/macarthurmedi1.wpengine.com\/?p=12975"},"modified":"2020-05-05T22:56:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T03:56:38","slug":"chlamydia-how-to-avoid-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expioconsulting.com\/macarthur\/blog\/2020\/05\/05\/chlamydia-how-to-avoid-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Chlamydia: The Most Common Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection and How to Avoid It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em><i>I never thought it would happen to me,<\/i><\/em>\u201d <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">is the most common response when I inform a patient they have a sexually transmitted infection.<!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">The hard to accept truth is that any sexually active person in a nonmonogamous relationship is potentially at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/stats18\/natoverview.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United States<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">. Chlamydia is known as the \u201csilent infection. \u201d Most have no symptoms at all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"846f\" class=\"jd je dr ar aq jf dt jg dv jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo\">What is Chlamydia?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Chlamydia, caused by the bacterium\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><i>Chlamydia trachomatis,<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Although easily treated with antibiotics, many infections are unrecognized. Testing is required to find it. When infections are left unchecked, chlamydia can lead to male and female infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic pain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4585\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Chlamydia initially infects the penis and the cervix (the opening of the uterus at the back of the vagina). In women, chlamydia can progress to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID occurs when bacteria spread from the cervix to the fallopian tubes. PID may result in scar tissue and permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues. In men, chlamydia can spread to the tubes surrounding the testicles causing\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/tg2015\/epididymitis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">epididymitis.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2cad\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Chlamydial infections can facilitate the transmission of HIV infection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"337a\" class=\"jd je dr ar aq jf dt jg dv jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo\">What are the symptoms of chlamydia?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Chlamydia is known as the \u201csilent infection.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/stats17\/chlamydia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asymptomatic carriers<\/a>\u00a0pass the infection from one partner to another. An asymptomatic carrier is someone who has the disease but does not know it. Without testing, people who do not know they have chlamydia unknowingly spread the infection to their partners.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"de55\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">When symptoms occur, they appear one to three weeks after infection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4de5\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Most often, men have no symptoms. Some may have penile discharge, burning with urination, anal discharge or irritation around the opening of the penis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"c582\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Women typically are also asymptomatic. Some may notice unusual vaginal discharge or burning with urination. Some may experience irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting. If chlamydia spreads beyond the cervix, one may develop lower abdominal pain, low back pain, nausea, fever, pain during intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"05f4\" class=\"jd je dr ar aq jf dt jg dv jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo\">How is chlamydia transmitted?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">There are two ways most STDs are transmitted: fluid transmission or skin-to-skin contact. Chlamydia is a fluid transmitted infection. Chlamydia is transmitted when bodily fluids from one person are shared with another via vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Fluids are present in the vagina, penis mouth, and anus. A physical exam is not reliable to diagnose this infection. A healthcare provider will obtain a specimen from the cervix, anus, throat, penis, or urine. Results are usually available within 1\u20132 days.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"cb9b\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/chlamydia\/stdfact-chlamydia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">The CDC recommends women under age 26, and those with risk factors get tested every yea<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">r. Risk factors include new sex partners, multiple sex partners, men who have sex with men, a sex partner with concurrent partners, and a partner who has a sexually transmitted infection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>How is Chlamydia treated?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Fortunately, chlamydia is a curable STD. It is easily treated with antibiotics. such as Azithromycin or Doxycycline.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2e87\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">All sexual partners must be notified, evaluated, tested, and treated. Pregnant women may pass chlamydial infections to their babies during delivery which may result in infections in the eyes or lungs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8c13\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Antibiotics are placed over the baby\u2019s eyes after delivery in most countries to prevent neonatal eye infections. Chlamydia is the leading cause of blindness in underdeveloped countries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"279f\" class=\"jd je dr ar aq jf dt jg dv jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo\">Prevention is key<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Prevention is best achieved by abstinence from sexual activity or to be in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship. The use of latex condoms consistently and correctly can reduce the risk of transmission.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7949\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sexography\/the-truth-about-condoms-6ec97ed44b4c?source=friends_link&amp;sk=850771752dad550c8d29301099c70a4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Condoms are highly effective<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0in preventing fluid transmitted STDs. Water-based lubricants should be used with latex condoms to provide the most protection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4220\"><\/a> <span style=\"font-family: medium-content-serif-font, Georgia, Cambria, Times New Roman, Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">The CDC recommends annual screening for all sexually active individuals younger than 26. Men and women with risk factors, including a new sex partner or multiple sex partners, should undergo testing. All pregnant women should undergo testing for chlamydia.
